This is a lighter weight and much cheaper way to go. A lot of guys pick up two sets of OEM skids from a Pro-4X or Off Road trim that someone is upgrading and install both sets - doubling-up on the OEM skids. Skids - I purchased a full set of Shrockwork 3/8" steel skid plates, but you might not need such heavy armor. There are other builders too, like Shrockworks, that make an excellent product. I purchased mine from the user MaxTerra on forum (he's a local and a friend of mine so I didn't have to pay shipping). Sliders - Having rock sliders is a huge confidence booster on the trails, they usually aren't too expensive (at least when compared with good suspension lifts and bumpers) and they protect those vulnerable rocker panels and doors from very expensive damage. Tires - Even the best suspension with the most impressive armor is SOL without good rubber. Here is my order of operations for a from-stock build: See where the improvements need to be made and go that route.įor the record my current 4x4 is an almost stock Xterra. Tl dr : keep it somewhat stock and drive it for awhile. (It started with 3 in lift and 33s and ended with a 3 in lift and 5 in lift springs in the back with stock blocks removed and 35s) if I had just waited, I would have saved $2500 ish between springs, control arms, track bars, shocks, and tires. I went lower again but with all new springs, etc. I went with a cheap lift and cheap shocks. I've owned a bunch of different 4x4s and one of the mistakes I learned from was modifying my old Dodge Ram what seemed like a 100 different times. It'll make the handling on and off road better than a cheap lift. At that point, as someone else suggested, spend the money on a good lift and good shocks. You may decide that locking differentials are what you want, or a lift. Then buy skid plates and maybe even a front bumper.ĭrive it stock height before lifting it. Go with new tires, the rock sliders and the rear bumper. I'd recommend a slightly different route. !/2005-2014-Nissan-Xterra-Rock-Sliders/p/1525333Įxactly how important are performance upgrades vs body/ride upgrades? Below are the items currently in my wishlist. I'm looking at a lot of different things after the tires but want to use my money efficiently and only purchase the important things first. I'm currently putting some money away so I can pick up some 32" LT tires to start. I've done plenty of reading and seen a lot or rigs with different mods but I don't know exactly what order I should go in with my upgrades. I currently own a 2014 Xterra X and I'm trying to search out the best recommended offroad upgrades for my truck.
